17 Litre Bikepacking Seat Pack Sewing Guide

The perfect capacity seat pack for your ultralight adventures, commuting and bikepacking races.

Sew your own commercial quality bikepacking gear with beginner friendly instructions.

“I can’t believe that is homemade”

This 17L bikepacking seat pack by Prickly Gorse is designed to fit nearly all bikes that have enough tire to seat clearance. This allows easy carrying of your camp or commuting gear on bikes that cannot fit a rack.

Uniquely, this design has optional sewing steps to make it work as a convertible backpack for short distances on foot, or for hike-a-bike sections.

This is the same tried and tested design I use to occasionally sell custom made bags at Prickly Gorse Gear

Features

The lightest weight way to carry luggage on your bike

Plastic stiffeners in the base, and optionally the sides and top, to improve stability

Two straps around the seatpost for increased stability, with suggestions for fabrics to minimise scratching the post.

Elastic cord on the top for quickly stashing items such as a jacket

Optional zipper pocket on the top

Optional stashable shoulder straps for off-bike carrying

Printable PDF Pattern and Full Instructions

US Letter, A3, A4 and A1 paper sizes

Every step is illustrated and described in plain verbose language for complete clarity. No confusing wall of text like you can find elsewhere.

The guide goes out of it’s way to help beginners get started with MYOG by additionally including a free 25 page beginner sewing tips ebook.

This seatpack has been on my bike over a year now, loaded, used 5 to 6 days a week. Still perfect.

Suggested Fabrics and Hardware (Notions)

Note: this is to give a rough estimate for budgeting. The sewing guide provides a complete comprehensive shopping and cutting list that should be used over this.

Fabrics are just suggestions. The entire bag could be made from <1 metre of a single fabric for example
